How does your brand make someone feel?

The other night, we hosted Allie Reveley for our weekly training call. Allie is a photographer in the Boston area. She and her husband Ryan have three sons, and several years ago, it became clear to them that it would be wise for them to re-think the nature of their employment so they could have more time for their family and a better income.

Allie was teaching at a small private school at the time, and a friend of hers started asking for her assistance with taking photos. Allie realized she was good at it, and it also became clear that the people she was working with really appreciated the way she made them feel when they were working together. Allie has a knack for bringing out the best in people and for making people smile who are typically reluctant to do so. Once this became clear to her, she realized she needed to start her own photography business.

Fast forward a few years and Allie's income has quadrupled and she has more clients than she knows what to do with. She regularly blogs at allie.photo, and she uses Instagram and other forms of social media to reach new clients. In fact, she has a little secret that she revealed to us on the call. That secret is helping her build her business quicker than most.

Allie's secret is that she doesn't only focus on the service she's offering and the tasks associated with it. She also focuses on how she makes her clients feel. They genuinely feel better after working with her. And that emphasis on the "feeling" her brand is creating also extends to her website, blog content, branding, and social media presence. Just check out her website and you'll see what I'm talking about.

For those of us who are also building businesses and online platforms, I think it would be wise to closely observe Allie's example. I think we should also be asking the question, "How does my content and my branding make others feel?" If you're inspiring people, I think your platform is going to grow much stronger than if you're just offering information in a dull or lifeless manner.

Allie describes her brand as "photography for people who love life." And that's exactly the kind of spirit she conveys in the content she creates.
