Is it fair to say that podcasting changed my life?

Several years ago, when I would mention the word "podcast," people would give me a blank stare.  It wasn't a word that the vast majority of people were familiar with.  But then Apple made podcasting a native app on the iPhone, and podcasting has exploded in popularity.

In recent days, Spotify has been getting a lot of attention from podcast listeners and will probably become the premier place to listen to shows very soon.

When I got into podcasting, I did it as sort of a hobby.  I knew it had value, but I had no idea how many people would actually listen to the content I was creating.

Fast forward to today and my shows have been downloaded over 7 million times.  Their rate of growth keeps increasing.  On average, I'm seeing about 250,000 downloads each month, and that number isn't remaining static.  Based on what I'm seeing, the day is coming when my shows might exceed 1,000,000 downloads per month.  If that happens within the next two years, I won't be surprised.

It's through my podcasts that most of my audience has discovered the other content I'm creating.  My podcasts lead to my website, books, speaking opportunities, and more.  My recent book deal with Penguin Random House was directly tied to the fact that my shows have gained in popularity.

None of this happened overnight, but by God's grace it happened in His timing, and I'm grateful.

Have you ever considered venturing into the world of podcasting?  Does it intimidate you?  Do you think it would be complicated to do?  Do you fear letting it become another huge demand on your time?

Tonight, I'm going to be leading a call that's all about podcasting.  We will be discussing formatting, show styles, content planning, and a few other things.  And if I do my job right, you're going to leave encouraged.  My goal is to simplify the concept of podcasting and help you realize that in many respects, it's as easy as talking or having a quick conversation with a friend.

You might also discover that podcasting might be a tool that God chooses to use in your life to broaden your reach, share the message you feel called to share, and serve more people than you once thought was possible.
